Atlantic Rising time capsule launched last night

  • 21/2/2010

Atlantic Rising is a charity embarking on a 32,000km journey to circumnavigate the Atlantic overland along the 1m contour line. Along the way they are creating an educational network between 15,000 students in low-lying coastal communities. Through they photography, films and writing, they are also documenting what will be lost if these predictions come true. The project won the 2009 Royal Geographic Society (with IBG) 'Go Beyond' Bursary!

As part of the project, students from schools on the Eastern side of the Atlantic have been writing letters and putting them into a time capsule 'buoy' - this buoy has just been launched in the middle of the Atlantic, and will be tracked using an embedded Yellowbrick tracker until it hits shore - which could be a year from now. Hopefully it will arrive on the Western side of the Atlantic, and the students in South America can them unpack and read the letters from their Eastern cousins!

The buoy and tracker was launched from the back of a ship last night as the Atlantic Rising team move from one side of the Atlantic to the other.

An exciting project form Yellowbrick to be involved in - you can read more about Atlantic Rising at http://www.atlanticrising.org
